Our Australian Shepherd developed mastitis in two teets. She whelped on a Thursday and by Friday evening she had a very low grade fever. We went ahead and took her in with the pups first thing Saturday morning (they were having their tails docked) and the vet looked at her and confirmed it. She got antibiotics right away and was just fine with nursing. You might want to talk to the vet sooner if you're not planning on getting their tails done for two more days.
But others, correct me if I'm wrong..... I thought tails should be docked 48-72 hours after birth.
