I emailed Wellness to ask the same question because the percentages of protein, fat, calories, and phospherous were nearly identical between the puppy formula and the small breed formula. I got a very generic response that didn't answer my question so I emailed them again. I'll let you know what they tell me. I know the 2 1/2 year old loves the puppy food, and he could stand to gain some weight
