Default Diabetes in Dogs

Hi,
I rarely post but often visit this site daily. I have a yorkshire terrier named Diesel who will be a year old in a couple of weeks. He was recently neutered and had his remaining puppy teeth removed. After having blood work done, the vet told me that my Diesel has high blood sugar and needs to be on a special food. They switched his food to Science Diet Prescriptive WD and he seems to like it alright. I am wondering if anyone else has a dog with high blood sugar and if so what food are you using? I have been searching the web for information and have found little however the sites that I did find all recommended Science Diet Prescriptives. I am also wondering if I should be giving him a certain kind of treat now?
Thank you in advance for any advice or information you have on this matter.
