There was a documentery on TV a few years back. It was on animal behavior and pain. Animals will not show signs of pain because it shows them in the light of being week, therefore fair game to others in the pack to take them down. Survival of the fittest. A camera was positioned in a Vet clinic and left on during the night. Animals that did not exhibit any signs of discomfort during the day, when left at night, actually were crying in pain. So, if one believes that pain meds are not needed, think again. My opinion is that not only does it keep them comfortable, it also keeps them down while they heal.
