I am a groomer and I can tell you when they mat it hurts them trying to get the mats out. Sounds like he loves having a goodtime outside so I would keep him short or maybe a puppy cut. I have a female in full coat and she gets brushed everyday. My next yorkie is going to keep a puppy cut.
