Dogs can get tapeworms from ingesting fleas. They are flat and segmented. Sometimes look like rice grains (when dried up) in the dog's sleeping area or on the fur near the butt. If you give heartworm meds monthly, some do provide some degree of parasite protection (usually not against tapeworms), depending on the product (should be listed on the box). Take a stool sample to the vet with you. If it's collected many hours before the appt, you can store it in the refrigerator (not the freezer) till time to go.
