I have 3 kids ages 18,16, and 14. Diva is 5lbs and is currently 4 years old. We have had her since she was 8 weeks old. Diva LOVES my teenagers and their friends. She seems to thrive on all the noise and extra hugs and kisses. My house is quite busy on weekends! She is also good with my 5 year old niece. We did, however, have to teach my niece the proper way to play with and love on Diva, and we never leave them unsupervised.
I think a larger yorkie would be great for your family as long as it is socialized as a puppy around kids. (i.e. not sure about adopting an older dog as so many seem to suggest regularly.)
