I had said for the longest time, "If Ellie ever needs surgery, she will go to a small breed specialist." Well, I never even ended up looking for one. Her teeth started falling out one day, and I was too freaked to care who took care of her. We ended up with a fabulous vet through the whole deal. I have no idea what I'd do without her, and she is not a small breed specialist at all. She only practices small animal medicine though (dogs, cats, rodents). We have never had a problem with her watching Ellie's size. All vets should know how much anesthesia to use, etc. That said, some practice better Yorkie med than others. It would be tricky to find one that knows a ton about the breed though. I would hesitate to go with a vet that does both small and large animal med only because a lot of times these are considered "farm vets" and some are very old school (outdated anesthesia protocol and such). So I think you have to know their protocols, know what they should be doing and then figure out if you want to keep going there.
