I did have a baby gate across the opening but decided to take it down the last time I tripped over it. I think I'm gonna try the cans. when Maggie first came home, at 11 weeks, she was jumping off the back of the sofa which is about 40" off the floor! another yt member suggested aluminum foil and it did the trick! they don't like the coins in the cans and you can see the cans from the floor so I think I'll give that a try first. She is my baby doll! my yorkie terror baby doll, lol.
