It's just frustrating when you spend $$ on clothes and then have to take the additional time to rework them...they should just cut the tummy areas short in production!

If you made the hem wide enough cutting a knit sweater would be ok, but you could double stitch for piece of mind. Just make sure you create an actual hem where the cut end is securely tucked in and unravelling should not be a problem. Of course, you'd have to cut less off to create an adequate hem (2 folds) so keep that in mind when measuring to cut a half inch less than you think you need.
