Molly partially tore her cruciate ligament 6 weeks ago and the vet said she needs to lose at least 3lbs to help with the healing (her weight slowly crept up from 14lbs to 17.2lbs in the last 2 years!).
You can buy a special food from the vet, but its science plan which i dont like, so i said i would cut down her normal food. Ive cut out all 'inbetween meal treats', and reduced her dried kibble. I add some veg and a few bits of boiled chicken to make her meals more interesting. She has lost just over a pound in 6 weeks which is really good considering she cant walk for more than 10 minutes a day, where before she would walk and run for an hour and a half .
I would just make small adjustment in what your dog would normally have and see if that works first, rather than buy a special food.
Good Luck, and please let me know if you come up with any good ideas!
