I've heard it looses its effectiveness after a while, so I buy a can about every 6-7 months or so. I don't think you really need to replace the can quite that often, but I've gotten attacked by dogs (thankfully alone!) many more times then I've liked so I am super super cautious. I quickly test mine every so often too just to make sure it still sprays.
The Mace company makes one "aimed" for dogs too. I believe it has a keychain (and I think a belt clip but don't hold me to that.) I've seen it, but since I can get Halt for a bit less and I don't know anyone who has used it I've never purchased it.
