Actually this only applies to a very few people, if the dogs had been sold originally with limited registration, their offspring would still be ineligible to sign with AKC. There were some breeders who switched over to the CKC even though their dogs were eligible for the AKC, and this applies to some of those dogs. I think at one time breeders signed up with the CKC because they thought it had some advantages, and were sorely mislead. There is more information on the AKC website.
