Glad to hear Brownie came through the surgery so well. I think I would stay with the e-collar if that's what your vet suggested or at least pose the question to him or her. Maybe down the road the vet will let you replace the collar. Your vet will know best. Congratulations on Brownie's successful surgery and best wishes for a very speedy recovery!!
