Groomers use to automatically express anal glands whether the dog was having problems or not. Many vets now believe that this shouldn't be done unless the glands are full. Dogs should empty the glands a little each time they have a bowel movement and the contents of the glands add a "special scent" to their poop. If not done properly you can push the contents further up the canal, and many people say that once you do it you have to continue to do it. I'm not sure if the color has any significance, I would visually check the area every day just to see if it's filling up again, sometimes adding fiber to the diet helps with this, and I'd call the vet and ask about the color.
