That is so true. The dachshund we have now (17 years old!) was very, very shy when we went to look at her. I was concerned because she was acting too meek. The little male (her only sibling) was rowdy, playful and just "full of it." I wanted him, but had already decided I was getting a female. So, with a little reservation, we brought her home. It took no more than a day or two and she was every bit as rowdy and playful as the little male had been. When she would have an especially wild evening, my DH would look at me and say, "And you were worried she didn't have enough spunk!"
Poor old girl has lived out her spunky days and needs help just to get taken out to potty now. But she has given us many, many happy years. AS long as they are healthy, and basically sound, I think we tend to "grow" them into the pet they become.
