a few facts:
-pits are great therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, and bomb dogs. they are eager to please people and will do anything for them
-Petey from The little rascals was a pit
-the dog on little house on the prairie was a pit
-Helen Keller owned a pit
-The Pit Bull was America's mascot in both WWI and WWII
-There was a pit named Sgt. Stubby who became a war hero by saving his entire platoon and capturing a german spy while being wounded in action twice.
-Pit Bulls scored an 83.4% passing rate on the american temperament test. yorkies score an 82.1% (ATTS - American Temperament Test Society, Inc. - ATTS Breed Statistics - page 1)

Here is a nice article on pitties. America's Nanny Dog - Times-Standard Online
No, actually, I don't feel I was rude. I have read several articles about pits being good family pets, and thousands of articles about them mauling or killing a family member or someone outside of their family.
Yes, pits were great dogs before people started being careless with breeding to acquire certain characteristics. The cases you stated were valid, but, most occured a long time ago.
Times have changed. People have changed. Years ago, pits were bred according to their standard; now, there is so much "back yard" breeding going on that you really don't know what you are getting. Very sad.

It is clearly not the dogs fault!!

I have had a very horrific experience with one of my former neighbor's family dog, and will never forget it. I do not judge all pits by that experience, but, that experience plus all of the weekly news reports about pits snapping, reminds me that the potential is always there. (Any dog can snap, understandably, but since this thread is about pits, I'm refering to pits).

Ok, this has brought back too many memories.
