It sounds like this trainer is used to dealing with larger dogs. I think he needs to retrain himself when it comes to dealing with small breeds. I mean, did he do any research?
Go with your instincts. Just as a vet isn't a trainer a trainer doesn't have medical training and isn't thinking about the health of the dogs. Don't go with the trainers recommendation on spaying.
