Someone just posted the "how to get the bow in" video like just last week. I don't remember who but it was so cool. They wrapped the elastic around hemostats then stretch it open over the clump of hair you grab and release and pull out the hemostats. You can then get many more wrap arounds and the elastic in way tighter. I am having trouble finding the hemostats in a store but I am going to keep looking. Maybe who ever posted that video could bump the thread up again if they read this.
also I think those thin silicone-like rubbery bands(the ones that come in black and clear and all colors- from dollar stores) those might work well
