The Humane Society of the United States is helping the Pontotoc County Sheriff's Office and Pontotoc Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.) move about 120 border collies from a 10-acre property in Ada, Okla. to animal shelters where they can be placed for adoption.

The Humane Society of the United States has set up temporary shelter for the animals at P.A.W.S. in Ada, and is preparing to transport 50 dogs to the Dumb Friends League in Denver. Staff members from the Nebraska Humane Society drove from Omaha to pick up the first 25 rescued dogs. The border collies will be placed up for adoption soon at their shelter.
"The Humane Society of the United States is happy to help move these animals from danger and take them to shelter where they can find loving homes," said Cynthia Armstrong, The Humane Society of the United States' Oklahoma state director. "We'd like to thank P.A.W.S. and the Pontotoc County Sheriff's Office for recognizing the gravity of the situation and reaching out to us."
P.A.W.S. called The Humane Society of the United States on June 24 seeking help capturing about 80 free-roaming dogs because the dogs' elderly owner was admitted into a nursing home and the dogs were left alone to roam the 10-acre property. The dogs were running onto area roadways, and The Pontotoc County Sheriff's Office asked The HSUS for help capturing the animals. The sheriff was concerned about the dogs' welfare and public safety.
After arriving Tuesday, The Humane Society of the United States discovered there were about 120 dogs on the property. HSUS field workers rounded up the border collies and set up the temporary shelter. P.A.W.S. in Ada has devoted resources and space to house the animals. PetSmart Charities donated dog food.
