Pano is more about consuming more calories than the body needs rather than the amount of protein. It's also due to rapid growth causing pain at the growth platelets. As the dog finishes their growth, the platelets are no longer in conflict, thus usually no more pain. Something not really an issue in small breeds as fu fu said.
