According to the lady at our local premium pet food store, they put those guidelines on the bag basically so they can sell more food.

I thought that was pretty interesting. She told me that with a yorkie, I'd do fine to even buy the little 1 and 2 lb sample sizes since they should last longer than you would think. I thought that was pretty good advice.
