well, first, let me say, I think your girl has MUCH better taste than your vet because purina is sort of...well....pedestrian.
royan canin is what we have fed our dogs in the past (now we are on a more holistic diet, but thats cause one of them has a skin issue) and they have always loved it.
Maybe your baby was thin because she didn't like her food. Maybe this change has jumpstarted her appetite. If you are worried about her knees, by all means take her to the vet, but I wouldn't suddenly stop free feeding unless he thinks she has gotten overweight (at 3 pounds!!!) and it is hurting her. She will likely level out on her own when she realizes this isn't a fluke, and you are going to keep "giving her the good stuff"
