Having owned both, I can tell you that it is not always easy to tell the difference. Since a silkie is a yorkie mixed with an australian terrier, with a touch of Dandie Dinmont, they can take after either side of the family tree in the same litter. Most times they have a little longer snout, a longer body and slightly shorter legs. Sometimes they are larger, although my friend has a 3.5 lb female silkie who shouldn't get much bigger. But her last silkie, a male, was 14 lbs!! But one thing that ALL silkies seemed to have in common is that they are always very very very busy. All the time. My yorkies would run out of gas and be snuggling on the couch while the silkies are still charging back and forth. Google pictures of silkies, Yorkies, Australian Terriers and Dandie Dinmonts to see the difference.
