I am so sorry for your loss. I am sure you and your boys need each other.
About 4 yrs ago, my friend's little girl who was 2, died during a liver transplant. Their springer spaniel was so crushed, as we all were, he lost his best friend. My friend and the dog mourned little Erin together, as she says now, they needed each other. I remember for a year that dog would go everrywhere with her.
