I have 2 female yorkies. One has a litter that is now 3 weeks old. The other yorkie is 1 1/2 years old and never had a litter. The mother has recently allowed the other one access to the litter and now the other one has become very protective of the litter and lays with the pups, cleaning them and allowing them to attempt to nurse. She allows the mother in the whelping box but often the mother will just look in the box and see that the other one is in there with the pups and walk away. I am concerned that mom is not nursing as often as she should because of this. And I am wondering if it will do any psychological damage to the other one if I restrict her access to the puppies. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My concern would be for the puppies and the litter mother. You need to keep her milk flowing and the only way she can do that is for those pups to nurse. The first 8 weeks of a pups life should be spent with their mom and only their mom. Concern of Psycological damage would be more for the mom and pups.....Once the pups reach 8 weeks of age, then you can introduce the other girl to the pups, but only after they've spend time with a mom in a play area.

I really don't think allowing your other girl around the pups was a good idea......
