Cotton coats don't shine like silky coats do. Also, cotton coats usually mat a lot and silky coats don't. Apparently, silk coats feel cool to the touch while cotton ones feel warmer. Cotton coats are also called 'soft coats' because the hair is so soft to the touch, and often the cotton coats have more, thicker hair. My Murphy seems to have a 'modified coat' - his hair is not the shiny silk but it doesn't mat as badly as a regular cotton coat would.
