We've noticed that to stop bad behavior (barking, biting, not listening), picking up by the scruff of the neck seems to work. We pick them up by the back of the neck (doesn't hurt them at all), have them look at us, and say "No Bark!" or "No Bite!" or whatever we are trying to correct. We still have barking problems on walks when they see other dogs (they just want to go play & say hi to them but get way too hyper no one ever wants to meet them anymore!), but all in all they are well behaved dogs.
