What blades #'s did you get? You're right, the higher the #'s the shorter the cut. A #40 is a surgical blade, cuts very close to the skin, we use this for the paw pads. #10 is for sanitary areas. When you order from petedge, it'll tell you how much length it'll leave. It also says it on the package of the blade. You always want to go w/the grain, meaning you don't want to start cutting from the base of the tail up your baby's back. It should be from the base of the neck towards the base of the tail & always watch out for those danger points like the flappy skin between their legs.
