The blades on my clipper are adjustable...raise the blade further out...cuts closer. The plastic guides are placed onto the clipper. I use a 1" plastic guide (comb). I think it's a number 10, but I'm not home to double check. You may be right....perhaps my smaller ones are numbered higher.
Or it may all depend on which brand. Mine is Andis
