Here's what has been recommended to me, although I've never had to use it. If the tail becomes swollen and infected, soak in warm salt water (epsom salt) 3 times a day for a few days, 10 minutes or so at a time, keeping the tail gently squeezed open so that any pus can drain. This is usually a local infection and may not require antibiotics.
