By this I mean, if a kid volunteers to give blood, help the poor, assist in an accident or disaster, should that same kid use that toward "community service" to earn scholarship money?
My thought is no! I want my kids to "do the right thing", to help others because it's the right thing to do, not to expect rewards or accolades. What do you think? |
I agree with you. I don't think that "being in the right place at the wrong time, and helping others" should be allowed to count as community service. It should be times that they planned, not when the moment struck. I want my kids to also do those things because they have good hearts, not to gain something. If they are planning on getting scholarships and need to do community service acts, they should carefully chose something that touches their heart and help less fortunate, but not list or use things that they have already done to benefit themselves....I hope that makes sense
I also think if a scholarship is offered for such acts, it should be offered to someone who has shown that they truly care. Nominated by peers/ school staff. Anyone can put on a front by helping out. And if you are only doing kind things for personal gain, you don't deserve it.
