I'm not sure what area you are looking in, but I was recently looking in the Morris County area and was running into the same problem with pets. I can give you some advice that I have learned through my search. Apartmentratings.com was my best friend...it gave a good idea of what the apartment complex was like so I knew if I should even go out to see it or not.
I hired a realtor, but she wanted 2 months rent in commission and I just couldn't afford that. So I turned to Craig's List and found a lot of good apartments and town homes on it. I actually took Bella Joi with me, along with a friend as well (for safety). EVEN if the ad stated no pets. I would just carry her along and I never had anyone say, "oh you can't live here with her". I actually got lucky and many said, "You aren't really suppose to have pets but since she is so well behaved I will allow it."
