As for adjusting to your home...I agree with Danyellm, be patient..some adapt very quickly and others take a lot of time. Just remember that you didn't live in that house with him for the 4 years of his life, so you have no idea what happened to him there. The previous owner told you that they "just didn't get around to neutering him" is such a line of bull! It's important for health reasons to have them neutered so loving owners who aren't breeding do it. That's just my opinion...not trying to offend you just give you another way of looking at it. Sorry, I'm overly suspicious of people.
As for food I love Evo (get it at Care a Lot pet supply). It's top quality ingrediants and Barley thrives on it.
They don't have it in puppy formula so Bijou is on Royal Canin and Eukanuba (foster used the Eukanuba, I don't like it) read the ingredants, if you can't say it, don't feed it to your doggies is my motto
Toys, toys, toys is what I'd recommend. Barley loves the big stuffed animals that are my Great Pyrenees' and he loves the little ones...anything that squeeks is his motto. Bijou loves cords so we get her the rope type with stuffed animals. They all love rawhide chews. I know a lot of YTers use the Bully sticks.
