This is what I've always read, and I saw a grooming show where the groomers used a slicker on a silky coat and the judges were furious, so not all groomers know this either, the slicker rips out the undercoat, and since Yorkies don't have an undercoat, you wouldn't want to do this. Plus the slicker is a very sharp brush and if there were no undercoat, this would be painful. A pin brush is considered the best for yorkies, and the pins should not scratch your arm if you run the brush down it.

The bristle brush is something different, and it isn't made for getting tangles out, but some people recommend it for spreading the oil that's formed on the body to the rest of the hair. People say it gives their dogs a shinier look, and this is similar to when women were told to brush their hair 100 stokes every night, you are just spreading your natural oil around.
