If a breeder fails to show you the dam, she either doesn't have her on the premises, she really doesn't like people which is possibly due to non-socialization or bad temperament, or she is UGLY as sin (possibly very large) and afraid if you see the mother you won't want the puppy. And most traits in dogs and animals in general are genetic. I always call the people I sell puppies to checking up on them to make sure they are doing alright and everyone is getting along well. If a breeder doesn't do that, they are out for the money and don't care about the dogs irregardless of whether they show their dogs or are classified as a backyard breeder.
