I'm probably WAY in the minority here, but I don't think a collar is THAT bad if they don't pull. But you must ensure they learn to walk properly on it with no pulling. When I take Jackson for walks, he's on a short nylon leash with a harness, but when we're going into our 3 acre backyard, I sometimes will just attach his long retractable leash to his collar because he doesn't pull on that. However; I probably also have a different prospective because my boy is 13lbs so he's larger.
