i rescued my dog when he was 4 and he just loved carriers from the start, so you don't necessarily have to start young for them to enjoy it. luckily, he is an extremely quiet dog and doesn't move about in the bag, so i can take him anywhere i want. taking him along eases my 'parent' guilt - when i'm at work during the week he's alone so i try to take him with me on days off and weekends.

i just recently bought an alex bag (size small, putty color) and i have to concur with the rave reviews. it looks like a regular purse and is just perfect for going into stores. my dog is 5 pounds and he just fits length-wise in the carrier. i have read that many people 'size up' when buying a carrier, but i was always told that a carrier should feel secure to them and if it's too long/wide they will be moving about. unless it's for a long duration (like flights) i'd buy a bag without too much extra room.
