I think people do this because the Poodle breed has three sizes, and at one time, they were as popular as the yorkie is now. There is a classification call the Standard Poodle, which is over 15 inches at the highest point of the shoulders. The Miniature Poodle, is between 15 inches and 10 inches, and Toy Poodle, is 10 inches or under; the Toy size was nicknamed a Teacup Poodle, and most people called the toy size a teacup. Yorkies, however, have only one classification and that is the toy size, and standard for the size is 7 pounds and below. So there is no "formal" classification in size for Yorkies, just nicknames. |
