Tramadol seems to be the pain med of choice for vets. Although vets consider it a "narcotic" - it is not considered as such for humans. I remember bringing my Westie to Cornell when she had cancer and the vets there would only give me a 5 day supply because they considered it a narcotic. I'm an RN and told them that we don't even have to count Tramadol in the hospital because it is a very benign pain med.
