Low carb is definitely a good way to go to get quicker results. There are many versions of low carb, and some allow more flexibility than others. One cheat won't be too bad, but if you get away with it once, don't be tempted to make it a habit until you are down and stable for a while. It could cause you to hit a plateau, then you have to work harder at getting into losing again.
I also want to say it is commendable to lose weight BEFORE surgery, and you will be happier with the results.
