Some of the wicker baskets have cloth liners, and these cover the tops and corners, which are their favorite chewing places. I've seen pictures of toy boxes made out of cloth, and they don't chew on those. You're right about the plastic with puppies, some people suggest bitter apple spray or a clear deodorant on the spots they like to chew. These work best if, used before the chewing has become a habit.
