I know that poor Rose will always wonder "what if" she hadn't had Teaser bile acid tested, would he have survived the infection. I certainly don't blame her for never wanting to BAT puppies again. What a terrible tragedy.
I think it is important to get the correct information out there, though, and not frighten breeders unnecessarily. According to necropsy, the puppy died from a bacterial infection. A 12 hour fast and a blood draw on a sick twelve week old puppy could certainly have weakened him and made the infection worse, though.
BAT tests on healthy puppies over 15 weeks as Dr. Center's protocol calls for are safe. Fasting is not necessary. The test is done with paired samples around meals.
