I've been doing this for a couple of years now. Mostly since we switched from land line to cell phone only. Just another layer of security next to my bed
I also use my remote in the parking lot for LOTS of reasons
If I forget where I parked I can hit the lock button and listen for the beeps or if I'm on an airport shuttle for example I can hit the button to give the driver a visual (lights flash) of where I'm to be dropped off! Also for the safety issue if I needed to set off the alarm
