Technically you are not supposed to take them out. At first I had her in my lap under one of those blankets where you couldn't see her, then the man next to me insisted on taking her out, and the flight attendents didn't say anything. I think it depends on the flight crew you get. He did insist that I put her in her carrier for landing though.
I flew Northwest by the way.
