Don't smell the stuff, smell the ears. I frequently smell my dogs ears, I have a poodle that is really prone to yeast and infections and the very first indication I get is the smell. The infection smells strong and rather nasty. The yeast is a milder smell and not offensive. Both need a vet to treat, you dont want to give the wrong treatment as it aggravates the ear if it is the wrong treatment.
