Yes, I think that would be an oily mess also! And since it only works to deter them, you still don't really solve your flea problem.
We have fleas really bad in our area too. Our vet has our two dogs on Sentinel for flea and heartworm prevention (taken on the 1st of the month) and also on Comfortis (taken on the 15th of the month). We've had great success with this combination. Maybe ask your vet about those. Frontline Plus didn't work well for us at all.
