When I was crate training, I did not leave food or water in the crate. I tried to leave water but they would always knock it over (even with the hook/latches on the crate door). There's water available on every floor of my house when they are not in their crate, and now I leave water for them in their play pen since they are no longer bound to just their crate. I feed them on a schedule & always have, so I don't leave food for them. Sometimes I left them a treat in their crate, but never a lot of treat or food.
