The government does not give you any money in addition to what your trade is worth. The new car you purchase does have certain requirements it has to meet as well. IMO, the program needs some work. The clunkers hace to be totally junked. For people that can't afford a new car, down the road, it will be hard for some to get needed parts.
I just recently read about the part where they have to junk the car you bring in for the Cash for Clunkers. The whole idea sort of goes against my grain. Taking perfectly good running vehicles, rendering them inoperable, and then giving you money..... I know it is supposed to help shore up our auto industry but only in America would the government pay people to trash a drivable vehicle.

We have a yard truck -- a 93 Sonoma that I got a card for in the mail to tell me it was on the list to qualify. This Sonoma was rated at over 20 some miles to the gallon, is a standard transmission and only has 56,000 miles on it -- really! We only use it around the property, it was our number 1 hurricane clean up vehicle. It is almost too sad to think of rendering it inoperable and sending it to the junk yard. But I could never sell it for $3500 or $4500..... decisions, decisions..... if I don't do something soon thugh, the program will be out of money again. That is the only vehicle I have that I would let go for that low of money. At first I thought maybe the car dealership would kick in up to the regular trade-in value -- that was before I knew they had to junk the vehicles.
