I just painted my bedroom taupe. There are so many different color's in that
range. They now have little bottles, $3.00 as samples to try on the wall.
I forget the color I used but I used it with blue, white and taupe spread
with accent pillows of taupe.

I agree the white chair rail would be great with the taupe and spread.
To the OP, if you ever watch any of those decorating show, very often when the room has been freshly painted, it does look dull, and I think why did they pick that color? But when the room comes together with accessories, and different textures, the room takes on a whole different feeling. HTTV's Candice Olson, (I love her) is especially good at this, the room's wall aren't really the focal point, but set something else off in the room to make it the focal point.
